My thoughts are much like those of luke. In part that is because I am not a fan of tattoos - I accept them as part of certain cultures, eg, Polynesian. I recognise that historically sailors often had tattoos but am oblivious to the reason. In modern society, and this in particular is my "turnoff", I do not see them as being aesthetic, especially when they takeover huge skin areas. I respect those members of the Jewish community who, in concentration camps were violated by being tattooed with a number, had the tattoos removed after being freed, but deliberately had them reinstated to foster awareness that "The Holocaust" did happen.
