My wife and I gave up DnD pretty quickly when we became unhappy with the Dungeon Master's interpretations of the rules that she insisted we adhere to -- the DM can make or break the game experience!

There are good DM's and bad DM's in the universe... that's the way it is. I have known some very good ones (one in particular who, in one game, lit a huge candle at the beginning and said if we want to get out of this alive, we better finish before the candle burns out), bad ones (A friend of mine, in his first DM exp, put a group of us playing brand new first level characters in a town filled with werewolves), and a few I simply walked away from, and I have done some decent DMing my self. Just a taste of some of the fun I have created. I once DMed a game that never left the town we were in. One of the players decided that his ranger character was having a crush on a female player's fighter character (It was just as much player crush as it was character crush). The female player was actually playing along with the whole thing (They ended up dating later... but only for a short time). So, the ranger decided to steal a love potion from the thief character (female player, my best friend, and the in-game girlfriend of one of my pc's [a thief acrobat] that I use as an npc in the game). I really didn't have to do much as the DM... I just decided on chance to hit roles and success roles and, periodically, would switch into npc mode as my thief acrobat would lean over to his girlfriend and say, "You know... I could just kill him." By the time it was all over, the fighter figured out what was happening and bribed the thief for the potion and she had the ranger drink it turning him into her little puppy that would follow her around and do what she asked. This game lasted for like 8 hours, fun was had by all, and I never really had to deal with any serious combat sequences (well... there were a few conflicts, but... no deaths).
