This is indeed interesting to read how people think about languages. Obviously there are mental connections I never heard of. :-)

But I just want to let you know that I'm the lazy one, spending only little time reading some message boards. That makes me skip all messages I cannot read easily. I tried translators but the result was more frustrating than useful so I dropped that habit again.
There is nothing wrong with posting in several languages. I just want to mention that not all are using translators though you could get the impression reading some posts here.

Concerning translation tools, I found out that translating French to English with Google translator is the most suitable tool. Translating French to German fails by a defect in the transfer of the sentence-construction. But single words, which are not to get from the French-English translation you can take from the French-German translation. Generally you should have some basic language feeling to make successful use of the translation programs available in the net.

Having failed two years of German in high school (I'm 1/2 German, 1/4 Swedish, 1/8 French and some other stuff), I just expect any translation page to give me the general idea of what is being said (I just make up the rest).

i agree with shark. German is great for rock and roll. Listen to the band Rammstein. They are German and their industrial rock kicks ass.

Das schöne am Internett ist doch, dass für jeden was dabei ist, in fast jeder Sprache. Wer Beiträge verfasst muss sich im Klaren sein, wen sie ansprechen sollen - und in englisch verstehen es die meisten. Es liegt also in der Verantwortung des Autors die richtige Sprache zu wählen und Babelfish kann auch meistens helfen.

scm5371 this thread is making me wish i could speak more than just english lol

Here are 4 translators, none are perfect but I get the gist of most texts.

http://www.freetranslation.com/
http://www.lexilogos.com/english/translation.htm
http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=EN
http://babelfish.yahoo.com/?fr=avbbf-us

Google is the easiest, I suspect Lexilogos is most accurate.
