Limited Engagement - alias - Going to be scarce

My wrist has been hurting more and more lately, so I went to see the doctor. I've been diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. In the grand scheme of illnesses, this is pretty minor, but it still freaks me out because I make my living with my hands. So I'm going to cut back very heavilly on non-essential typing. That means I'm probably not going to be around much for a while.

I'm letting everyone know so you don't start saying, "What happened to Tlaero? Did we make her mad?" I'm not mad at anyone. Just healing.

Ok, dear lady, let the healing begin.
Best wishes.

Same from me of course. Get well soon.

@ tlaero;
I will miss your posts. You've earned a special place within the Lagoon. There may be other women that are more often noted but none more helpful.
Get better... Then please return.
In my thoughts

there are keyboards that basically split down the middle and fold out so you type, basically, with your palms facing each other instead of the table. That does far less stress to the wrists. You should look in to getting one of those.

And.. if not that... I wrest my wrists on a pillow I designed to keep my wrists off of the table (so I never place my hands in that wicked angle that does a lot of the damage to the joint). They are easy to make.

I'll second what Loup Garou wrote. I hope you can find a comfortable solution and quick.

The thoughts I'd like to second are those of LRM.

You will be missed. Here's hoping that you can heal and return quickly.

For What It's Worth - I used to have a chiropractor who said that he could fix (or at least help) Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. I never had opportunity to check his word on that, but I reason to believe him - he'd fixed or helped some other conditions that I didn't ever expect he'd be able to do anything about. I'd still be going to see him, but i moved about 2,000 miles away from his office. It might be worth looking around your area to see if you can find any help along those lines.

Strange that you should ask.

I was aware that tlaero had been dropping by but rarely commenting so I sought her out.
She has advised me that her wrists have shown little improvement but said that a colleague of hers had a similar problem.
That person had taken to indoor rock climbing and was feeling some benefits. Tlaero has decided to see if that can benefit her.
Sorry, but not other details. We can only just wish her well.

Having suffered from CTS, I would have to recommend release surgery. It's not too painful a recovery, about 4 weeks on average, and as long as she sleeps in a wrist brace (assuming she already is) she should make a near complete recovery. Best advice I ever got from a doctor was to rest it as much as I use it. Its an outpatient operation and overall, I found it to be an interesting experience.

Don't want to open a can of worms, but I don't trust chiropractors since the most I ever saw a doctor for my CTS was twice before surgery and twice for follow up over the course of about six months. Most people I've heard going to Chiropractors end up being locked into weekly visits for months on end and unnecessary treatments. Overall, they end up spending more than surgery costs, assuming she has insurance.

Hi, ctunnel! I did suggest in a PM to Tlaero when she first mentioned her problem that she should see if you had any useful suggestions.

I suspect that one of my cousins suffered from something similar two or three decades ago when he was in Spain learning rasgueado strumming techniques with one of the world's top flamenco guitarists. Unfortunately sensible advice on these things was rare to unavailable at the time and he went from being an extremely good guitarist to a non player -- such a shame!

Update: I haven't been posting, but I still read the forum.

I have good days and bad days with my wrist. After all this time, it's pretty clear that it's not going to get better through resting it, so I'm going to wade back into the lagoon a bit. I'm sure I'll type shorter replies than I did in the past, though. Long typing sessions wear me out.

Thank you everyone for your advice. However, my condition isn't actually Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. You know how when you live in a little town 15 miles away from a big city, and someone asks where you're from, you give the name of the big city because there's no way they'd know where "Flatrock" is? That's what I'm doing when I say I have CTS. Truthfully, I've got an instability in my wrist that is caused by a tendon that is either extremely lax in its duties, or non-existent. This is combined with a problem in my shoulder that makes everything on that side work poorly. I've been to various doctors, specialists, and physical therapists, and do the right exercises daily. They help a little, but aren't going to cure me. I also do rock climbing, but that's doing more for my figure than my wrist (not that I'm complaining). I'm coming to grips with what this means for me. There's a guy at work who only has one arm. Things could be MUCH worse. So I'm hanging in there.

Good to see you.
You posting one or two words is enough to make my day.
Please don't overdue it.
