Wastecase's Signature (as of this minute) reads:

"I saw a warning on a jar of peanuts that the product may contain nuts. It makes no sense...I know.
I just thought to myself, wth - and ate them anyway."

My question to Lagooners, is the rest of the world this stupid (not you Wastecase) with product warnings, or is it just us dumbass 'Merican's. (Willing to grab the closest lawyer and blame anyone else for our own stupidity.)

Other wonderful product warnings:

Butane cigarette lighter: Caution contents flammable.

Sleeping pill: Caution, may cause drowsiness.

Pleas add yours,

M

Hi Mimailia,
there is another way to read the warning on the peanuts package. It says that the product may contain nuts. Three observations on this wording
[*]A biologist told me some years ago that peanuts in a biological sense are not nuts, but are something else (I forgot what it was). So if this is true, then the text on the package warns you that there might be something in it that you do not expect from reading the title.
[*]Recently I learned that if you buy a fish mac at a McDonalds restaurant, then you do not get fish as there is no fish in the product called fish mac.
[*]If you go to a porn site, you see a warning that there might be pictures of nudity on this site :) Shocking, indeed. isn't it?

Cheers,
qbv8

A peanut flavored soy product maybe?

A legume I think?

Shark tastes more like other mammals, not like fish.

I suggest to write " warning, work tires " on all work contracts and " warning, this action is bad for your finances" on marriage certificates....

coder, only mermaids know the real shark taste...

YES!

And I would like to add:

Write "Warning: Life always ends deadly" on birth certificates.

Depends... I've heard of black widows who made fortunes with marriage contracts. Image

Hi, all: this warning could have a very serious meaning. Peanuts are not really nuts and nuts are commonly to be taken as Hazelnuts. Some people have special allergic reactions when eating their allergene(s). And so, if an allergic for nuts eats peanuts, which are harmless, he needs the informaton very badly that in a certain packing of peanuts could be a little amount of nuts. This could save him from getting severe physical reactions of eating only a very small amount of nuts.

I didn't know mermaids ate sharks. I'm really sorry for you.
@Arnulf, people allergic to nuts are often also allergic to peanuts and other legumes.

Well, the protein that evokes allergic reactions in nuts also happens to be present in all sort of fruits like, strawberries, cherries, apples, etc. But it is not present in peanuts, and usually not in legumes except for a very few exceptions. Instead, it occurs in the pollen of larch and willow.

But more seriously speaking, I cannot really imagine that this would be the reason why the companies have written that warning on the package. Instead, to my opinion this is due to the legislation in the United States where some lawyers found a very profitable business model by performing ridiculous claims against companies and interpreting the law by the letter and not by the intent.

In Europe we have a different jurisdiction in that respect, and thus the claims are much to a lesser extent, and the sum to be paid by companies when condemned is much smaller.

To summarize: the reason is not the degree of dumbness of people on the different continents, but it is the legal system: wherever there is a hole, you can find a lawyer that sticks his .... into it.

Q: What's this: A ship with 50 lawyers on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean?
A: A beginning!

I believe that Shark had something else in mind with his post. I believe that everyone here understands what Shark meant. However, to be absolutely sure, only one Lagoon member would know for sure!! Actually two....

Exactly!

As far as the peanut, nut deal goes, I have an 8 year-old nephew with peanut allergies. I watched helpless once as he almost died from a reaction. Luckily we found my brother who had a remedy. We don't need labels on peanut butter, when Clay comes around. It is put securely away, though he is getting old enough now to truly understand the dangers of it himself.

If you've never seen it, it would blow your mind how quickly it can occur.

@co90921. Let's just say I have a talent for finding the exact interpretation people did not intent.

@qbv8: You're right about the warning being there for companies to legally cover them for claims. (I always remember the famous dog in the microwave-case)

It has it positive side too though. It also means information about possible allergic reactions will be printed on products were it's not so obvious.

about the nut/peanut allergies. A friend of mine is allergic to nuts and also to peanuts and a few other legumes. According to him that's quite a common combination. I'm no expert though and not familiar with the technical details.
