Maybe individual JPG images, cycled with javascript? Maybe H264/WebM played with an HTML5 browser? Being a bitmap with only 8-bit indexed color and no intra-coding, GIFs have both poor quality and poor compression efficiency, and are only still used because there hasn't been any other format successfully pushed into widespread compatibility.
