Over here in the UK the scene is a bit quieter -- it's the small hours of the morning on Shrove Tuesday and our "exciting" tradition as Lent is about to commence is to cook and toss pancakes after the evening meal (we serve them up with sugar and lemon) The tradition is intended to clear out rich foods like eggs, sugar and milk before embarking on 40 days of plainer food during Lent. I guess "Fat Tuesday" or Mardi Gras serves the same sort of purpose (only somewhat more flamboyantly!)
