I found a simple 3D applet framework that could be fun and played a bit.

Is that the same framework which you mentioned when discussing the puzzle using DiTo's pic?

No, here I used 3DzzD, a 3D engine. The puzzle was done in Swing i.e. only with Java features.
The 3D engine can either use a software renderer or OpenGL. That means one could build a 3D scene like a house with animated models and run this as a simple Java applet in the browser. With some sexy models and a game idea that sounds like fun :-)

I have some ideas how I could evaluate the 3DzzD engine but keep the workload low enough for a small one-man-project.
I'd like to create a little 3D game around that story: A king (or whatever sovereign) protects and locks his daughter when he leaves his castle. Now he's gone quite long and some of his servants think it's time for a brave man to free the princess. The avatar is the young man trying to free her and there are several obstacles like loyal guards and locked doors. The result should be more like a strategy and puzzle than an action game.

And here's the problem: For a 3D game you need models with animation data. The 3DzzD can read and process key-framed 3DS models. For the very first approach I boldly took one of Shark's models but they have neither a skeleton nor keyframes.

As we now have a development and projects forum I dare to ask: Is there anybody out there willing to contribute some models? I think I can work on the environment and the details but my skills are really not in the field of good looking 3D humans. I tried before and failed miserably. This will be a non-profit little project and I plan to keep the source with an open license. That means that the models should be usable for such a project (in other words: royalty-free and redistributable).

I may have noticed that Shark indicates that Anim8or is good for viewing his 3D girls. It also affords skeletons on which to hang a mesh.

I haven't tried to apply a skeleton to any of those. 3DS MAX from AutoDesk also allows skeletons.

Sure, there are 3D programs out there that can be used - as long as there is some artist in front of the computer. 3DS Max is not really the one for Indie developers (4500 Euro for a single license) but there are others. I use the free SoftImage ModTool 7.5 currently.
The problem is not the software ;-)
