Cursed Game

Postby LFox » Thu, 11Oct13 04:17

I'm usually not the sort to post games but i thought this might be of interest to people and i hadn't seen it posted anywhere.

The game is called Cursed and it's designed in RAGS as such its a text adventure style game set in the modern days. You start the game off as a guy who's only interest in women is to use them as one night stands. A mysterious woman approaches you and turns you into a woman as punishment for your ways. Your goal is to live out the next year of your life as a woman.

After the introduction the game becomes extremely open ended and in my opinion its similar to an adult text version of the sims in a way. You get a job, you workout, buy clothes, visit places, go on dates ect. Because of the magic that changed you your body is very pliable so you can change your figure, your height, your hair color and model your character how you want them to be.

The game itself is still a large work in progress and is currently a little light on the sexual content. However it's updated 5 times a week with new features, content and bug fixes. The creator runs the game on a donation system so if people want a particular feature in the game they can donate money and ask for it to be included.

If your new to the Rags Game system i suggest you read through the link below. It has help outlining how to navigate and play Rags games.

This game is really worth to check. 26 Mb game made in rags without any pictures, just pure simulation of new "made" woman speaking for itself. Author is open for all ideas, so we can also take part in process of making it. Have fun

It looks interesting. One problem I have is why the author chose to use RAGS, a system designed for graphic oriented games and cumbersome for a totally text based game. It would have been better to have used a system designed for text games. I think the major interactive fiction systems (Inform, Tads, etc.) have modules that allow creation of Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA) games; that is, the player chooses the option from a number of choices.

There are a number of free CYOA systems available. Of interest is the Quest Markup Language (QML) which allows for graphics, and text input by the player when needed, available here: http://www.questml.com/

I am sure more examples of CYOA systems can be found on the IF archive.

Just a little correction: RAGS is not designed for graphic oriented games. It's designed for interactive fiction (read the first paragraph of RAGS site ) where the text plays the most important role. Graphics are used for illustration purposes. It's true that (in my opinion) Rags is the engine I know that better marries text with pictures. Besides, for a non-coder it is the easiest to use for building a game. I didn't even see the game as - unless I'm part of a beta-tester group - I refuse playing games that are not finished and thoroughly beta-tested. But it is for the author to remove the picture box from a game, in this way giving more space for the text to be displayed.

Again my opinion (but I'm sure that I'm not alone) these two suggestions point to the two most difficult engines for a non-coder author. ADRIFT 3 and 4 and Quest 4 are much easier to deal with than Inform or TADS.

I didn't know about this one. Thanks for the link!

I stand corrected about RAGS. I think if a game developer used one of the CYOA modules for Inform or Tads he/she would not need to learn the whole system and would find it a lot easier than coding a full game requiring text input from the player. I should have mentioned ADRIFT, but it didn't come immediately to mind. It might be very suitable for CYOA games. Also, Hugo, ALAN, and other systems may have CYOA modules.

I'm struggling to get my head around the assertion that "RAGS is not designed for graphic oriented games" While you could use it for text-only games, the default set-up of the RAGS player suggests that graphics are an expected part of the game. The front page of the RAGS site also states that "With an integrated picture and object library, you can upload your game pictures once and never hunt for them again", and doesn't mention text at all.

I'd also dispute the claim that Inform is one the two most difficult text adventure engines. The natural language system is specifically designed to make game code easier to read, and thus less intimidating for an author without a programming background. One of the entries in this year's AIF Minicomp was a CYOA written in Inform. I'd also suggest ADRIFT 5 (donationware) as an alternative to ADRIFT 4 ($18.95) or 3 (outdated).

Other CYOA specific engines include Twine (http://gimcrackd.com/etc/src/), Undum (http://undum.com/), and DreamPath (http://drakevision.com/projects/dreampath/index.html)
